Dear Stacey,

Halloween is fast approaching, and it’s bringing with it a flood of memories.

When you and I used to live at 316 Ringold with Kris and Deena, we had the best times of our lives. During the Halloween season, we used to run around to our friends’ houses, playing little tricks on them. We were such naughty little girls!

Okay, so we were in our twenties. Heh!

My favorite trick, and I still reminisce about it to others, is when you, Kris, and I bought a whole bunch of plastic forks and took them to Rich’s house. Mike was living there at the time, and Kris had the hugest crush on him. (Who didn’t she have a crush on in those days? Right?) We didn’t know Rich very well, but because Mike was there, we decided that it would be all right to pull our little prank.

In the past, we had done our share of toilet papering our friends’ houses. However, we were older now and we were far above merely throwing some toilet paper in some trees, letting it dangle there in all of its streaming glory. Oh no no. We were more creative than that.

With the forks in our hands, we stealthily traipsed over the well-groomed lawn, crouching in the darkness as we stuck four hundred plastic forks into the moist earth. We were constantly checking the house to make sure that we hadn’t been seen, continuing across the large yard.

We could barely keep our giggling silent. We had parked our car on the next block, so when we ran out of forks, we ran as fast as we could to the car, laughing all the way. As is true for most criminals, we couldn’t help but visit the scene of our “crime.” We drove slowly past the house, ducking as we caught a glimpse of Mike and Rich walking around in their yard.

Busted! We had been seen. With a heavy foot, we zoomed out of there, hardly able to contain our laughter.

Fortunately, Rich and Mike both had great senses of humor.

That was just the tip of our trickery in those days. Not a Halloween passes now when I don’t think of a little trick to play on someone. It’s no fun without you, though! Some day . . .

Your friend,

Maggie
