Dream Television
February 2003

I am a television junkie. I can’t help it. All things entertainment intrigue me and captivate me. I love learning about all the Hollywood and international stars. I read all those silly little “fluff” magazines from which I can get the latest (and no doubt inaccurate) news on everyone from Sandra Bullock to Tom Cruise to Davy Jones. I do take everything I read with a grain of salt and believe little to nothing, but I find it interesting nonetheless.

When I moved out here to sunny southern California, I actually had a secret dream that I might become a tutor to the stars, a studio teacher. Heh. I most likely wouldn’t last very long, but I had these suppressed desires that, of course, will never come to fruition. Ah, one must have dreams, though.

There is one night that I set aside, devoted to television viewing. My friends and family know that it’s the night that they might not see me online or hear from me on the telephone. Thursdays are my “Must See TV”. I watch NBC on the early feed (thank you, DirectTV) and CBS at the regular time. So, yeah, I waste away on Thursday nights.

I have other favorite channels, as well. I’ve talked about my fascination and obsession with Lifetime Television. Gosh, the movies that are on that always make me cry. Good thing I actually enjoy crying during movies! It’s such a release. I love movies that draw out my emotions. It also has movies that have a lot of humor and romance, too. Those two should always go together, humor and romance.

I once received a telephone call where the caller asked me if I would be interested in answering some questions about television. Being a TV junkie, I said, “Of course.” Question upon question ensued. I had nothing but time, so why not? The woman asked me all kinds of questions about this channel and that, what I liked best about this or that, and what I would like to see in a dream channel.

Gosh, a dream channel. What would I want? It’s almost too overwhelming to even answer. My tastes in television programming are so eclectic. I love movies, comedies, dramas, classics, music, entertainment, etc. The only genre that I could live without (and would very much like to) is reality TV. That’s a whole different entry, though. Heh.

I would say that if I were to create my own television network, I would have to make it a hodgepodge of programming. There would have to be some movies, with a few series maybe. One thing that I would really like to see is a network that played movies from the 80’s. You know, the fluffy and cheesy movies from that ever-so-endearing era. Breakfast Club, Footloose, Fire with Fire, Sixteen Candles, and many more would grace the schedule. It couldn’t be just those movies, though. There would have to be some classic sitcoms and dramas. Remember Family Ties? Oh yeah.

Fortunately, many of those shows are already in syndication and are aired on Nick at Nite or TNT or TBS or ABC Family. I just don’t know if I could imagine a network that had it all except for maybe a network that had it all! A combination of the aforementioned networks maybe.

I really need to get out more.

February Topic: If you could create your own cable network, what shows, current, cancelled, or vintage, would you feature on your lineup?
