This summer is just flying by. Quickly. In a flash. Faster than you can say snot. It’s nearing the end of June, and I have yet to do anything productive. But who says that one must be productive on summer vacation, right?
My dear friend from Wisconsin has driven down to visit with me for ten days. I haven’t seen her since Christmas, so it will be good to have her here. She’s really good about visiting me wherever I live, even if it is just one time. I give her a good reason to travel! (She’s visited me in New Jersey, Michigan, California, and now Georgia. Interesting that she never visited me while I was in Australia. I wonder why. Heh. Go figure.)
I don’t have a lot planned for her visit. I am in no way a good touristy kind of a host when people come to visit me. I rarely see the wonders of where I live myself! However, we have planned to go to Savannah for a few days so that we can visit a beach and see some of the history of the state. What’s weird is that most people here wonder why anyone would want to go to Savannah, or they will say, “It won’t take you long; there’s not a lot to see.” Do they not know the history that their state has??? Of course, I am a northerner, and we don’t have as much of a history. When I bring that up, a lightbulb seems to go off. “Oh yeah, I guess you’re right.” I still find it interesting that people here wonder what there is to see in Savannah.
Savannah was lovely. Both my friend and I really enjoyed the beauty of the “Old South”. Although it rained every day, at least it waited until evening while we were there. Whew! The beach was nice. We visited that first. I got sunburned. I always get sunburned. I guess I need something that is higher than a 50 SPF. Good grief! It doesn’t help, though, that I forgot to put sunscreen on my chest. Man oh man. There’s a lot exposed in a swimsuit on one’s chest. And I have a lot of chest to expose! Heh. I’ll be peeling from this burn for days. Months even. Oh joy!
I need to give my friend a name. I am sure that I have mentioned her before, but I can’t remember the name I gave her. I’ll have to look that up. I’ll just call her Sam.
Sam and I went on a little horse-pulled carriage tour of the historic district of the city. It was great! I mean, it’s always nice to be in a carriage. The pace was slow enough to really enjoy what was being pointed out to us. It gave Sam enough time to take some nice pictures. I’ll try to get some posted if I have the time or energy to do so. The city was built in squares, so there are many squares that are part of the area. I believe there are 24 or 25. Each has its own name and something special about it. A couple were used for more parking, but most of the original squares are still there. We also enjoyed seeing the old cemetery. If I remember correctly, the cemetery has people in it who died from the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s. It was really interesting to see how they put things on the headstones. For each it was mentioned how old they were in years, months, and days. As it got into the 1800s, it went to just years. So many young kids and young men and women. One has to remember that they didn’t live as long then as we do now.
Another thing that Sam and I enjoyed were the, oh what are they called… row houses! Beautiful. The red-brick roads. The houses lining the streets. I can just see the little town back then, neighbors riding into town in their horse-drawn carriages, the women walking down the streets with their hoop skirts and parasols. (I understand now why they fainted a lot back then. It’s sooooo hot, and they had to wear all those clothes. Man oh man, people must have smelled back then!)
We’ve just returned from the lovely city, and now we have a few days before my birthday, which is just a few days before I move, which is just a day before we leave for Wisconsin. So much to do with so little time. I am excited to go and visit my family. I know that they will have much for me to do. I’ll be spending time with someone at almost each moment that I am home. I’m so used to being by myself that sometimes all of the time I spend with people back home gets a bit difficult. Not a bad difficult. I just need to accustom myself to it at first. I love my family, and I love spending time with them!
I am so excited to see the nephews and niece! They just grow so quickly. It’s one thing that makes me wonder if and when I should move home. Although it’s nice to see them and have them excited to see me because it’s infrequent, I do miss seeing them grow on a continual basis that I would have if I were to move back home. I’m just not ready to do that quite yet.
Well, as I sit here, looking around my apartment, I wonder how the heck Sam and I are going to get me moved! I have some moving guys coming on the 30th to help me with the big stuff, but Sam and I are going move the small stuff. I figure it will take us a few hours to do, so it shouldn’t be too bad. The movers should get the big stuff moved in about an hour (although I have to pay for three anyway). Hopefully it won’t be too strenuous! She and I are driving back to Wisconsin on the 1st of July!
I’m just babbling now, so I’ll sign off for now.
