Just thought I'd share my schedule. It seems crazier than normal this year.
Instructional hours are 8:50-3:50.
8:15 - The doors open and students arrive in our classroom. We must be there to supervise even though it's not instructional time. The kids eat breakfast and I have them do "morning work".
8:50 - Morning announcements.
8:50-3:40 - Instructional time.
3:40 - Bell rings, afternoon announcements.
This year we are on a 6-day schedule for their specials (Art/Music/P.E. and Science Lab/Computer Lab/Library). Five of the six days are art, music, p.e which give us 45 minutes of planning/prep time. On the 6th day, we rotate the science lab, computer lab, and library (so each is done every 18 days). On the 6th day, we have no planning or prep. Previously, we've had 50 minute planning times every day. Now they are 45 minutes and every 6th day we get none. We've lost 75 minutes of planning every 6 days. Also, now we have to plan EXTRA for those times. Less planning time but more planning to do. Blah! I'm not happy, but life goes on.
3:45 - After announcements, car rider, after school program kids, daycare are all dismissed.
3:50 - We are given the line-up of the 14 buses and K-1 are dismissed. (We line our kids up and walk them to each bus and drop them off.)
3:52 - 2-3 are dismissed.
3:54 - 4-5 are dismissed.
4:00 - Walking back to my room with a smile on my face (after checking my box one last time for the day).
4:15 - Our required time to be there ends.
MWF - 6:30-7:30 - I leave the school.
T/Th - 4:15 - I leave the school to go work out. (If I didn't have a workout buddy, I'd be at school late, too.)
Hopefully my late nights will end soon. We have a demanding load this year outside of teaching. It makes it overwhelming at times.
1st Wednesday of every month - 4:15-5:00 - Committee meetings. We are required to be on 2 committees. So, we end up doing one committe meeting that day and the 2nd one another day.
2nd Wednesday of every month - 4:15-5:00 (or later) - BST committee meeting.
3rd Wednesday of every month - 4:15-5:00 (or later) - Faculty meeting. Many of these meetings will also be inservices, so they may go later.
4th Wednesday of every month - 4:15-5:00 (or later) - Staff development meetings. Yay for us.
PTA-sponsored, must-attend functions:
Back-to-School night (prior to first day of school)
Open House
Monthly meetings/grade-level performances
I think that covers it. To say that I am overwhelmed with the extra duties this year is stating it lightly. I'm a seasoned teacher (8th year), but this is... WOW!
All of this does not mention the time I put in evenings and weekends planning. (I often don't get finished with work - prep, planning, grading - until 11:00 or so.)
Every Tuesday, our planning time is a team/grade-level meeting, although with new administration implementing so many new things, we're actually meeting 2-3 times a week to plan, incorporate, design, whatever.
One night a week after school we try to plan at least part of our lessons together as a team. We must turn in lesson plans (with activity, standards covered, assessments, essential questions/objectives) every Thursday for the upcoming week.
I am also a mentor teacher this year for a new teacher. They told me she wasn't new, but I found out that she only taught the last two months of school last year. She's new! She als taught EIP/Title, which means she wasn't a classroom teacher. Yeah, she's new! I also mostly mentor another 3rd grade teacher because her actual mentor teacher is a 4th grade teacher in another hall. I cover most of the questions/concerns that the new teacher has. (She's brand new, but over 40. Kudos to her!) I'm also one of two teachers out of 7 that have been on our 3rd grade team. The other is our team leader.
Over the summer I was trained to be a trainer of a new writing program that our school is going to implement. The date scheduled was February 21st or 22nd. Then it was changed to October 10th. Now it's November 1st. Nice, huh? Pick a date and stick to it, for crying out loud!! I've been implementing the program in my classroom to get a handle on it. It's changed my routine, but that's an interesting thing, not a bad thing.
I am hoping that time put on my class and lessons and planning outside of school will decrease as I get used to these new demands.
There's nothing like teaching, though. Eat. Breathe. Sleep.
Good thing I love my job!
