Are There Stars in My Eyes?

Once upon a time I had heard a story about a young woman who decided to take her future into her own hands. As she lamented over the fact that she was still single (I’d never do that!), she had an epiphany of sorts. No longer would she sit around doing nothing. No longer would she just *wait* for Mr. Right (wouldn’t Mr. Maybe be good enough?). As the story goes, she rushed out to the nearest Gap and purchased a pair of (men’s) khakis. She took them home and laid them carefully on the end of her bed. Tender fingers stroked each leg of the pants, lightly smoothing them out. She then fell to her knees, closed her eyes, and prayed.

“Please, dear God, fill these pants.”

I’ve written about this before. Heh! But I think that I have now decided who it is that I’d like to fill those pants. If only I knew his size, I could make sure the pants . . .

I have been thinking a lot on this lately, and it appears that the perfect man for me would be Mr. Steve Guttenberg. Yep, that’s right. I admittedly am fairly starstruck, but I have truly always really really liked Steve Guttenberg. He seems like such a nice guy! I think it would only be right to actually get to know him so that I an honestly and personally say that he is, indeed, a nice guy. In fact, he’s been described as a "heck of a nice guy”. He’s only eleven years older than I am, and I think that we would make some fine looking babies! Heh!

Okay, so maybe this will not pan out. Unfortunately, you can’t just go to the phone book, look up “Guttenberg, Steven R”, call him up, and ask him out for some espresso and biscotti! (You can't, can you?!) Dagnabit! If only things could be so easy! Then, of course, I would have to woo him. One date consisting of espresso and biscotti would never be enough. I would have to entice him into asking *me* out!

I’m going to need a lot more than a good pair of khakis.

On a different note . . .

I just arrived home after a nice little drive from Wisconsin back to California. Mom and I took three days to get here. It was really nice. I just remembered how awful it was the first time that we took this trip together.

I had graduated in May 1998 and spent the whole summer sending out resumes and being interviewed for various Wisconsin school districts. Nothing panned out – either I wasn’t interested in the position or I wasn’t offered the job. I was really beginning to worry when it was August, and I still had no teaching job. Fortunately I had a full-time job, but it wasn’t teaching! Finally, I heard from a school district in California. A phone interview was scheduled. I was a little apprehensive because, although I did send out a resume or two to California, I wasn’t really interesting in moving there. After the interview, however, I knew that I would be offered the job. That’s how good I felt about it. I was right.

Three days after the interview, I was offered the job (one business day – interview on Friday evening, job offer on Monday morning). I was ecstatic, but would have to quit my job, move out of my apartment, and be in California in a matter of days. Eight, to be exact. That was my first trip across the country with my mom. (She’s so cool!) I suppose the fact that we were rushing the last time, making the trip less than enjoyable, had a lot to do with my apprehension of repeating the trip. (Gosh, what we do for our pets!) I also had all the anxiety of being a new teacher with very little time to set up a new classroom (less than a week!).

This trip, however, was a lot more enjoyable! It’s amazing how less agonizing the drive can be when you aren’t really on a schedule or time-crunch. Mom and I had some great conversations. We talked about everything, and we didn’t argue even one time! We were like buds. ;-) We also listened to a lot of music! I had about 20 CD’s in my car, so we listened to each one at least once.

The route that we took this time was basically the same one that we took four years ago. When Stacey and I drove to Wisconsin in July, we took the southern route, driving through Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, and Illinois (I may have missed a state in there, but I’m too tired to look). The route Mom and I took was the northern route, driving through Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, (a titch of) Arizona, Nevada, and into California. It was like I looped through the western two-thirds of the country!

On of my favorite stops was in Green River, Utah. It must be some kind of melon heaven or something! Wow! There were little melon stands strewn along the main street, and Mom and I stopped at one and bought three melons – watermelon, honeydew, and an amazingly delectable melon that I had never ever had before, canari melon. Yes, something as small as that can get me all excited about such a little unknown town in Utah!

Lucky, the reason for the road trips this summer, was an exceptional rider! He just laid in the back seat and slept for most of the drive. Never did he whine or cry or tinkle or poo or vomit! A few unsuspecting motorcyclists did receive a bark-filled greeting, though!

I have been gone from my home for a month. When I arrived, I found my swamp cooler on. Yikes! It would appear that I left it on. For a month! Egads. I am not looking forward to seeing my water bill this next month. At least I wasn’t here to take showers, flush the toilet, wash dishes, do laundry, or water my sand. That will help. Right? Right?!?!
