LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!

It's here! It's here! It's the last day of school!

I'm not TOO excited about this... really, I'm not. ;-)

Today we went to the pool. This is 3rd grade tradition at out school. We leave all the chaos that is the last day of school waaaaaaaaay behind!

It started out very chaotic, though. Field trips always are! However, on this particular day, I seemed to be missing a student. No one was listening to me as I was calling off names to see which head was missing from my count. I also had parents calling out, "I'll be taking [student] with me!" Okay, okay. Now who should be with me? Heheh.

We finally were getting out to the bus when one of my little girls comes up to me, near tears, and says that her dad isn't here. He was just here! Where is he? This particular girl will not go anywhere on a bus alone (without one of her parents). In fact, she never goes on the bus; she normally rides in her parents' car. So, we spent about ten minutes looking for the dad. I even dared to have him paged, which is something that just isn't done after the bell rings!

Finally we found him! He was in his car the whole time. Then he decided that they were going to ride the bus with us. Panic painted itself on this little girl's face, but she rode the bus! No harm done.

The pool was fantastic. The kids were excited going down, and when they saw the pool, lots of oooooooo's and ahhhhhhhhhh's were heard. It's pretty big. (We did have a parent, of course, who had to say, "Our pool in 29Palms is just as good." Slap, slap! We take the kids to a different one to give them a taste of something new! Good grief! This same parent, a wife of one of our teachers, spent part of the trip down complaining about certain things regarding our school/teachers/principal. Yeah... She's a charmer! She's nice and all, but such negativity!

The day was a successful one. We swam, we had pizza, we played with beach balls, and we raced. It was a blast. The day was perfect: hot but with a light breeze that made it very comfortable in the shade and in the water.

Every year, no matter how much sunscreen I slather over my flesh, it becomes charred. I usually go back to school as red as a lobster. I'm serious! I always use a high SPF, too! The sun here really *is* hotter and more severe! Well, this time I didn't burn. I thoroughly slathered several times, and I wore a shirt over my swim suit when I was out of the water. It worked. Thank the good Lord!

When we got back, it was just in time to release them to the buses. I mean... just barely in time for that! I had bus duty, so I handed out report cards, wished the kids a great summer, and said goodbye. After I okay the buses to go (after everyone has checked in), all the teachers line up, chorus-line style, and the song "School's Out for Summer" by some heavy rock group is played over the intercom. We teachers do the chorus line kick and wave goodbye to the kids. The buses usually circle around and come back so the kids get one more chance to say goodbye.

This year, when the buses circled around again, and we were waving and shouting goodbye, it really hit me that I might be saying goodbye for the very last time to these little munchkins. It took all my self control to not cry.

I really don't like the fact that I may not get to work here next year. I'm still trying not to worry, though.

I had such a great group of kids. I truly am going to miss them, whether I return or not.

NO SCHOOL LEFT Schoooooooooooooool's out... for... summer!
