Divine Secrets of the Teaching Sisterhood

This morning I went to school to put up a bulletin board. I love to think up bulletin boards and put them up, but it’s just a pain taking the time to do it. I volunteered to do the bulletin board out by the office, so I couldn’t put it off forever. Actually, my class did the things for the board on the second or third day of school. It had been done for almost a week before I went to school to put up the board. Oops!

The bulletin board would be “School fits us to a TEE!” I had each of the kids write a sentence or two starting with, “I like school because . . .” and then illustrate their sentence on the tee-shirt. They turned out so well. The sentences were great, and some of the illustrations were so cute! I love kids. I made a big, red schoolhouse with a little white bell tower with the title on it. It turned out great. My class is well advertised.

Kathy and Patti were also at school. We had planned to use this Saturday to sort out this whole new math curriculum thing. It’s definitely been a challenge to go from our former curriculum, which was extremely successful. As I’ve stated before, we are also expected to get a lot done in a little time. It leaves little opportunity to review lessons and go over concepts that the students are struggling with. There’s a point, though, where we have to “put up the hand” to the district and do what’s best for the kids. We three agreed that we would do the very best to get through what we needed to get through, but not at the expense of the students’ learning.

One thing that really made me proud is that Patti and Kathy, the two veterans, took one of my ideas and are going to incorporate it into their classrooms. I looked at the whole curriculum and found the way that I felt the students would best learn from, and they agreed. I always feel like such a child when we’re planning. Most things are done how they have been doing it. It’s nice to know that my ideas are thought of as innovative and workable. I may be “the kid”, but I’ve got some brains, ya know!

After our planning morning and afternoon, we went to down below for a dinner and a movie. After a nice little dinner at Don and Sweet Sue’s (How delightful is that name?), we went to the budget theater to watch “The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.” It’s two dollars to see a movie on the big screen. How cool is that? We’ve all wanted to see it, but none of us ever got the chance.

The movie was fabulous. It was what it was: entertaining. All of the characters were delightful in their own ways and really drew us into their lives. The film had us laughing one minute and finding ourselves in the midst of tears the next. It was great. We all want to see it again so that we can watch it more closely the next time, hopefully picking up on things that we may have missed the first go-around.

Bah to the person who told us it was a “lesbian” movie. Yeah. Sure. Whatever!
